en: This study focuses on a Postclassic Maya agricultural almanac in the Madrid Codex (12b-18b), which seems to show a registry of eclipses integrated with observations of Venus in the context of a 260-day calendar (Tzolkin). Using the dates of eclipses visible in Yucatan, it is possible to date the events between 1452 and 1492, contemporary with the use of the codex.>>>
en: A number of pieces made from seashells representing individuals in courtly settings or divinities in mythological scenes have been reported in the Maya area. These exquisitely worked artifacts display the openwork cutout silhouette of the figure, with details rendered by incised lines and carved out areas to inset inlays. It has been proposed that a number of these objects belong to the same manufacturing style. Most of the pieces are in private collections and lack archaeological context. The Maya collections in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City have a unique example of this type that comes from an excavated context. Known as “The Smoker,” it was found at the island of Jaina in 1964. This paper presents the results of iconographic and technological analyses of this important artifact, in order to explore its relationships to the above-mentioned tradition.>>>

en: Northern Yucatan lowlands are uniform in appearance but actually there are clear environmental differences, which define several ecological niches. Human beings have been able to adapt to these microenvironments by optimizing settle - ments in order to benefit from local resources. The Central Northern coast of Yuca - tan and the inland route offer different ecological niches so, taking advantage of the results of a series of archaeological surveys and rescue projects, it has been possible to identify significant differences in settlement patterns and building characteris - tics. Such data can be helpful to understand the type of relationships maintained by its inhabitants with these environments and how they adapted through time.>>>

en: The vessels known as “dynastic vases” conform a group of around 17 ceramic vases, characterized by the presence of epigraphic texts. These texts include a list of rulers, which are assumed to belong to the Kaan dynasty, beginning with its hypothetical founder. Considering the work done at the end of the 20th century by several researchers, like Robicsek, Hales and Martin, we will reanalyze the epigraphic information registered in two of these vessels. Thus, we will be able to propose new readings and, consequently, present information that had not been considered earlier.>>>

en: This paper is an attempt to restitute the original meaning of Maya translations of some paragraphs contained in the first page of the Chilam Balam of Chumayel. The verses contained at the initial section of the Maya text show the cosmological conception associated with the beginnings of this era, when the elements of the Axis mundi split into four directions. Some translations and editions omit the mention of maize and/or beans in the south and the lima beans in the east; this omission mutilates the complete meaning of this part of the text, where they are evidently present. I also attempt to restitute the presence of ritual pozol (saka’) and tzune in two of the Zuyua than interrogations, where they were misidentified as atole in all the Chumayel editions.>>>

en: Previous studies of language attitudes in the Yucatan peninsula have addressed mainly the Mayan language, but none has been conducted that consider Spanish or English, nor using the matched-guise technique. Consequently, this instrument was used in the present article to study the attitudes towards Mayan, Spanish, and English in three urban contexts in the region. The findings are expected to be useful in areas such as language policy and planning, as well as in education.>>>
